Sunrisers Hyderabad once again showed their intent to dominate early, racing to a strong start with both openers in control during the Powerplay. With runs flowing quickly and wickets intact, it reflected their usual aggressive template — seize momentum before the opposition settles.
This approach has often unsettled opponents. Even Chennai Super Kings had prepared specifically for it, introducing part-time spin early in an attempt to slow down SRH’s left-handed top order. For a brief period, that plan worked, keeping scoring under check.
However, the balance shifted quickly when Abhishek Sharma counterattacked. Targeting the bowler’s length, he launched a sequence of boundary hits that flipped the pressure entirely. Within a few deliveries, the control CSK had built disappeared.
Despite the dominance, the breakthrough came at a crucial moment. A mistimed shot from Travis Head ended a strong opening stand, bringing Chennai back into the contest. While the partnership had already set a platform, the timing of the wicket changed the rhythm.
Head’s innings, though useful, highlighted a broader trend. His returns have dipped compared to previous seasons, with fewer impactful contributions and a noticeable drop in scoring rate. While not alarming in isolation, the consistency that once defined his game has reduced.
This dip has had a ripple effect on the team. SRH’s batting unit, which thrives on collective aggression, has struggled when the top order fails to fire together. Their average totals remain competitive, but the lack of consistency has exposed vulnerabilities.
A recurring issue has been the quick fall of wickets. Time and again, one dismissal has triggered another in rapid succession. This pattern has disrupted their momentum and forced the middle order into consolidation — something that doesn’t align with their high-risk strategy.
Heinrich Klaasen, often tasked with stabilising the innings, has adapted by taking a more measured approach. His slower starts reflect the situations he has walked into, where preserving wickets becomes more important than immediate acceleration.
While Klaasen has continued to score runs, his strike rate has come under scrutiny. However, his role has been more about ensuring stability rather than maintaining tempo, especially when early wickets fall.
In the match against Chennai, SRH still managed to post a strong total, thanks largely to Klaasen’s composed innings. Their bowlers then held their nerve late in the game, using disciplined execution to secure a narrow victory.
Even so, the bigger picture remains uncertain. SRH continue to show flashes of dominance, but sustaining that level across an entire innings is still a work in progress. Until their key players rediscover consistency, their aggressive starts may continue to carry an element of risk.
